Eating well after weight loss surgery should be an enjoyable and meaningful experience. One way to stay on track with your eating plan is to understand the role of food in helping you feel satiated after your weight loss surgery.

1. EAT PLENTY OF PROTEIN
Foods that are high in protein help you to feel fuller for longer. Most people need to eat between 60g to 80g of protein each day. Try to avoid protein shakes, and instead opt for foods that have a great protein count, such as:
• Beans
• Cottage cheese
• Eggs
• Fish
• Greek yogurt
• Lean meats
• Lentils
• Low-fat dairy products
• Oats
• Poultry
• Tuna.

2. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER
Drinking plenty of water helps you to feel full between meals. This can help you to avoid snacking. Aim to drink around eight glasses of water a day.

3. MINDFUL EATING
Mindful eating is an easy way to feel full and appreciate your food. Instead of concentrating on your phone, TV or other distractions, pay full attention to the processes of eating. Thinking about what you are eating and slow down your chewing so that you become aware of the process of eating. Give yourself plenty of time to enjoy and finish your meal and avoid eating while multi-tasking.

4. GET ENOUGH SLEEP
Not getting enough sleep can affect your weight loss goals. Your body needs sleep for many reasons, including for digestive health. Some people who don’t get enough sleep experience problems with digestion and an increased craving for sweet, salty, fatty and starchy foods. Try to start your day feeling well-rested. If insomnia is a problem, speak to your doctor.

5. CREATE A ROUTINE
While it may not always be possible, try to create a routine around eating your meals. Skipping meals because you are busy or eating later than usual often leads to unhelpful snacking and poor food choices. Not eating at regular intervals can also affect blood sugar levels, leading to an increased feeling of hunger.
