Dr Kiron Bhatia is a highly experienced General, Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon. Since 2010, he has worked as a senior consultant with the UGI Surgical Unit at Austin Hospital, where he remains committed to delivering compassionate care to every patient.

Dr Bhatia completed his surgical training right here in Melbourne at St Vincent’s Hospital. He then continued his training with subspecialty UGI fellowships at the Austin Hospital and Monash Medical Centre.

Since completing his formal training, Dr Bhatia has continued to build on his surgical skills.

2010 – Tokyo, Japan

Dr Bhatia undertook post-fellowship training at the National Cancer Institute Hospital. This helped him gain valuable experience in advanced laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery for oesophageal and gastric cancers.

Surgical education

He is a faculty member with the RACS/GSA Simulation Program and the International Medical Robotics Academy (IMRA), contributing to the training of future surgeons.

Robotic surgery mentorship

He also provides proctorship for surgeons training on the Da Vinci robotic system, helping to advance robotic techniques.

2013 – Heidelberg Weight Loss Surgery

Dr Bhatia founded Heidelberg Weight Loss Surgery to provide dedicated, multidisciplinary care for patients requiring general surgery, bariatric treatment, or UGI cancer management.

2014 – Houston, Texas

He later completed further training in robotic surgery at Memorial Hermann Medical Centre, Houston, Texas. As one of Melbourne’s leading robotic UGI surgeons, Dr Bhatia has performed a wide range of procedures, including:

  • Revisional bariatric surgery
  • Gastric bypass
  • Sleeve gastrectomy
  • Heller’s myotomy for achalasia
  • Giant hiatus hernia repair
  • Complex abdominal wall hernia repair

Dr Bhatia is especially passionate about bariatric surgery, reflux, and other common oesophageal conditions. He also performs a broad range of general surgeries, with care that’s tailored to each patient.
