Dr Kiron Bhatia and his team at Heidelberg Weight Loss Surgery report that a new, self-administered drug has the potential to circumvent the need for weight loss surgery in a small percentage of patients.
Originally designed as a treatment for patients with Type 2 Diabetes, the new drug, called Ozempic, is proving to be a useful intervention for people who are looking to lose 10 – 15 kilograms and are not quite ready to take the step with surgery.
The medication works to both suppress appetite and make a person feel full. Dr Bhatia says that Ozempic is an excellent option for people who find that changing their diet and increasing their exercise is not enough to lose weight.
“Ozempic can be used effectively for low BMI patients who want to lose a moderate amount of weight and are willing to combine the medication with nutritional intake and exercise changes. While it is not suitable for everyone, it can be a good option for some people,” he said.
Ozempic is also useful for people in preparation for surgery who are of very high BMI.
Ozempic was verified as being available for Type 2 diabetics on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) in March 2022. There is hope that it will be added to the PBS for weight loss use later this year.
