Robotic Surgery Using the da Vinci Surgical System
Robotic Surgery
At Heidelberg Weight Loss Surgery, we’re proud to offer robotic-assisted surgery using the advanced da Vinci Surgical System. This cutting-edge technology allows Dr Kiron Bhatia to perform complex procedures with enhanced precision, minimal invasiveness, and better patient outcomes.
If you’re considering weight loss surgery or upper gastrointestinal procedures, robotic surgery may be an option to improve your experience and recovery.

What is Robotic Surgery?
Robotic surgery is a form of minimally invasive (keyhole) surgery. Unlike traditional open surgery, robotic procedures are performed through a few small incisions using specialised instruments and a high-definition 3D camera.
Using the da Vinci Surgical System, Dr Bhatia controls robotic arms that mimic the movement of the human hand — but with greater range, steadiness, and accuracy. The system doesn’t act on its own; every movement is 100% surgeon-guided in real time.
Why Choose Robotic Surgery?
The da Vinci system is an excellent tool for complex procedures, including revisional weight loss surgery or upper GI operations where enhanced visibility and precision are essential.
Benefits for patients may include:
- Smaller incisions – less scarring and post-operative pain
- Shorter hospital stays – many patients go home sooner
- Faster recovery times – return to work and daily activities sooner
- Lower risk of complications – including bleeding and infection
- Improved surgical outcomes – due to the accuracy and control of the system

Robotic surgery questions
How Is Robotic Surgery Different from Laparoscopic Surgery?
Both laparoscopic and robotic surgeries are minimally invasive. However, robotic surgery offers:
- Wristed instruments that allow for a greater range of motion than standard laparoscopic tools
- A 3D, high-definition view of the surgical area
- Increased stability and precision, especially in tight or delicate areas
- Enhanced ergonomics for the surgeon, which can improve concentration and accuracy during complex cases
Is Robotic Surgery Safe?
Yes. Robotic-assisted surgery using the da Vinci system has been used safely in millions of procedures worldwide. It is especially valuable in surgeries that require intricate movements or access to hard-to-reach anatomy.
At HWLS, your safety is our priority. Dr Bhatia is highly trained in robotic surgical techniques and will guide you through your options with care and expertise.
Does It Cost More?
While robotic surgery can be more resource-intensive, many private health insurance policies will cover the procedure if item numbers are applicable. However, some additional hospital charges (such as robotic consumables) may not be covered by all funds. Consumable costs are usually absorbed by the hospital with no extra cost but we may charge a gap for greater time allocation for robotic cases (that is offset by the benefits)
Our team can provide a detailed quote and discuss any out-of-pocket costs during your pre-operative planning.
Procedures We Offer Using da Vinci Robotic Surgery
At HWLS, we may utilise robotic surgery for:
- Sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve)
- Gastric bypass surgery
- Revisional bariatric surgery
- Hiatal hernia repair
- Abdominal wall hernia repair
- Other upper gastrointestinal procedures
During your consultation, Dr Bhatia will advise whether robotic-assisted surgery is appropriate for your individual needs.
Experience the Future of Surgery
With robotic-assisted surgery, we offer a modern approach that combines surgical precision with patient-centred care. Whether it’s your first bariatric procedure or a complex revision, the da Vinci system may help ensure a smoother and safer experience.
